One Day in Gibraltar: Monkeys, Views, and British Charm on the Rock

Let me just say it: I should’ve paid more attention in 7th grade geography. When I saw Gibraltar on our cruise itinerary, my first thought was, "We're going where?" And when I looked it up on Google Maps and saw that it was the country known for the famous Rock (no, not Dwayne Johnson the actor, but an actual rock), my over-40 self couldn't stop humming that Ashford & Simpson song, "Solid as a Rock." (Uh oh, there it goes again). I honestly didn't have much of an expectation for this place, and when I walked off the ship thinking I was somewhere vaguely Mediterranean, I was surprised to see that I was caught somewhere between Spain, the UK, and a monkey zoo. And honestly, I wasn’t mad about it.

So, are you planning a day trip to Gibraltar from a cruise or nearby city? This compact British territory at the southern tip of Spain offers more than just a big rock. In just 24 hours, you can soak up sweeping views, meet mischievous monkeys, walk through centuries of history—and yes, cross an actual airport runway on foot. Whether you're a first-timer or an over-40 explorer looking for low-stress travel, here's how to make the most of your Gibraltar visit.

So, where exactly is Gibraltar?

If you're like me and don't know much about Gibraltar, let me fill you in. It's located right where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. While it’s attached to mainland Spain by a short land border, it's definitely a British territory. Think British red phone booths, fish and chips, epic views and monkeys galore. Expect people to speak English and Spanish and use both Euros and British pounds. It's a unique little mashup where you can sip tea with a side of tapas and, yes, spot Spain peeking over its shoulder.

Cruise Port Guide: Here’s What You Need to Know for One Day in Gibraltar

If you're arriving via cruise, this Gibraltar cruise port guide will help you maximize your one-day itinerary—especially for us 40+ folks who like comfort and culture. The Gibraltar Cruise Terminal is just a quick 10-15 minute walk from the city center. You can walk it, grab a taxi, or hop on the local shuttle. If the weather cooperates, I would suggest taking the walk, but if you’re over 40 and your knees sound like they’re part of an out-of-tune orchestra, maybe taking the shuttle is the better option.

Pro tip: Start early to beat the crowds (and the monkeys).

Start with the Gibraltar Cable Car up to the top of the Rock to take in the best Gibraltar views. Think stunning, panoramic, and breathtaking views. On a clear day, you can see Spain, the Mediterranean, and Morocco! Imagine being able to view 2 continents, 3 countries, and the meeting point of 2 great bodies of water all at once. Now that's a must-see! If you're up for a challenge, you can also hike up to the top and watch your Fitbit dance with joy. Keep an eye out for the famous inhabitants of the Gibraltar Rock, the Barbary macaques, which are the only wild monkeys in Europe. With more than 300 of them, these creatures add an unforgettable touch to your visit. Just remember to protect your belongings, as these monkeys are notorious for snatching sunglasses, snacks, and whatever else they can get their hands on.

  • Visit the Skywalk (feel like you're floating, or slightly terrified)

  • Wander into St. Michael’s Cave that features incredible rock formations with stalactites and stalagmites (not that I remember the difference of the two) that dazzle visitors.

Interesting fact: This cave can seat around 600 people for concerts and temperatures can dip as low as 50°F (10°C) even during summer!
